Joseph Alcaraz is the Associate Vice President, Risk Engineering at Sovereign Insurance.
Joe started his insurance career in 1993 and developed proficiency in all lines of commercial insurance coverage conducting risk/loss control surveys ranging from small, medium sized risks to larger highly protected risks. Joe specializes in the construction segment, and advanced fire protection.
In 2009, Joe assumed the role of National Manager, where he led the development of a risk control web-based reporting and management system. Also, led the development of customer service materials which helped transform the risk control function into a client centric orientation.
In 2011, Joe transitioned into the role of Director, Risk Services Ontario & Atlantic Region where he led a team of Risk Services Consultants and Specialists including Mid-Market, Large and Complex, Equipment Breakdown, Transportation & Logistics and Agricultural Risks.
In 2015, Joe joined Sovereign to lead the strategic refresh and transformation of Sovereign’s Loss Control Services to National Risk Engineering Services. The risk engineering practice supports our Commercial and Specialty Operations including Energy and Natural Resources, and Equipment Breakdown practices. Joe led the partnership with Risk Control Technologies and launched SERA – Sovereign’s risk engineering report management system after 9 months of development and implementation. In 2018, Joe supported the creation of Anchor Risk Solutions Corporation which became an Authorized Inspection Agency recognized by The National Board to conduct jurisdictional boiler inspections.
Joe is a licenced Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a graduate of Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering. He has his Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP,) and Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designations. Joe is recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS.).
Joe lives in Mississauga, Ontario with his wife Margaret and 2 teenaged boys – Eric and Adam. He is a volunteer with Little League baseball and is currently the Head Coach of the 15U Erindale Cardinals Tier 1 Baseball Team.
