As cyber threats become more sophisticated, cyber insurance is evolving beyond recovery to help organizations identify vulnerabilities, strengthen cybersecurity, and reduce the likelihood and impact of cyber incidents. Cyber insurance has traditionally focused on helping organizations recover after an incident. While that remains a core function of commercial insurance, organizations also need insurers that can help them prevent cyber incidents and build stronger cyber resilience. &ldquo;Cybersecurity has moved from an IT issue to a core business resilience issue,&rdquo; says Sue Elliott, Senior Cyber Risk Specialist, Risk Engineering, at Sovereign Insurance. &ldquo;The risks organizations face today are more complex, interconnected, and disruptive than ever before, making proactive risk management essential.&rdquo; Organizations are operating in increasingly interconnected environments, relying on cloud providers, technology vendors, supply chains, and critical infrastructure to keep business moving. A disruption affecting just one part of that network can quickly have wider consequences. Cyber threats are also becoming more frequent and severe, while rising business interruption costs, regulatory requirements, and recovery expenses continue to increase the financial impact of losses. As a result, Elliott says cyber insurers have become strategic risk management partners by combining financial protection with proactive risk assessment, prevention, and resilience-building initiatives that help organizations strengthen business continuity and navigate an increasingly uncertain risk landscape. Common vulnerabilities Many organizations believe cybersecurity is purely a technology problem, but the majority of cyber incidents stem from people, processes, and governance issues, says Elliott. &ldquo;Often it&rsquo;s a combination of fundamental control issues that lead to cyber losses as opposed to just one vulnerability,&rdquo; she says. Weak identity and access management controls, inconsistent use of multifactor authentication, delayed software patching, limited employee awareness around phishing and social engineering, growing third-party and supply chain exposures, and the absence of tested incident response plans remain among the most common cyber vulnerabilities that organizations overlook. Organizations that establish and regularly exercise incident response plans are generally better prepared to contain threats, co-ordinate recovery efforts, and restore operations efficiently, thus helping to reduce business interruption, financial losses, and reputational damage, Elliott explains. &ldquo;Effective cybersecurity requires a holistic approach that extends beyond technology and addresses the people, processes, and governance structures that support an organization&rsquo;s overall security posture,&rdquo; she says. Closing the gaps Cyber risk assessments help organizations identify, evaluate, and prioritize threats before they become incidents. The process gives organizations a clearer understanding of their cyber risk posture while helping align security controls with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and an evolving threat landscape, Elliott explains. Sovereign&rsquo;s approach includes identifying critical assets, assessing threats and vulnerabilities, reviewing existing security controls, and prioritizing mitigation efforts based on business impact. Threat intelligence, historical incidents, third-party, and supply chain risks also help inform practical recommendations that strengthen an organization&rsquo;s overall security posture. &ldquo;The goal is not to remediate every vulnerability, but to partner with brokers and customers to identify key risk exposures, prioritize remediation efforts, and reduce the potential impact of future incidents,&rdquo; says Elliott. She adds that strong cybersecurity controls deliver value far beyond insurance. They help organizations maintain business continuity, minimize downtime following a cyber incident, and make more informed technology and digital transformation decisions. Organizations that invest proactively are generally better positioned to adapt, recover, and continue operating when disruptions occur while also strengthening stakeholder and customer confidence. Changing conversations &ldquo;Brokers have a unique advantage because they&rsquo;re having conversations with clients before a loss occurs,&rdquo; says Elliott. Moving from the traditional discussions focused on limits, deductibles, and coverage terms, brokers can now provide the guidance and risk reduction strategies that clients are increasingly looking for today. &ldquo;These value-added discussions allow brokers to become strategic advisors who can help clients manage risk and reduce losses and business exposures,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;This approach can also help strengthen long-term client relationships.&rdquo; As organizations shift their focus from a reactive mindset to a resilience-focused approach, this will create opportunities for insurers, brokers, and risk engineering teams to play a more proactive role by combining insurance protection with cyber assessments, risk intelligence, educational resources, and incident response planning. &ldquo;The future of cyber insurance isn&rsquo;t just about paying for claims following an incident,&rdquo; says Elliott. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s about helping businesses prevent losses and recover faster, and providing the tools they need to operate and succeed in an increasingly digital world.&rdquo;

Specialization is becoming table stakes, but there&rsquo;s not a one-size-fits-all solution, advises specialized commercial insurer Sovereign Insurance. Standing out as a broker is harder than ever. Clients expect more, risks are evolving, and new distribution models continue to reshape how insurance is bought and sold. Most brokers recognize that specialization is becoming an increasingly important part of how they respond to pressure. The challenge is defining what that should look like in practice. Data from Canadian Underwriter&rsquo;s 2026 National Broker Survey, sponsored by Sovereign Insurance, reinforces how strongly brokers feel that pressure: 87% of brokers say they need to become more specialized to withstand changing technology and sales models. Brokers are navigating pressure from several directions. Half cite rapid technological change as a major challenge, while just over half (54%) are threatened by the growth of direct-to-consumer models. Forty-seven per cent say misperceptions about broker value remain an obstacle. As a specialized commercial insurer, Sovereign works closely with brokers that have already made deliberate focus choices and sees firsthand how specialization can strengthen growth, client retention, and trust. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve seen a clear trend toward greater focus and specialization among our broker partners,&rdquo; says <a href="https://www.sovereigninsurance.ca/our-team/montreal/francois-desbiens-dubois" title="" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fran&ccedil;ois Desbiens-Dubois</a>, Manager, Commercial Auto Underwriting, at Sovereign. &ldquo;What&rsquo;s become clear is that there isn&rsquo;t a single definition of specialization. It depends on the broker&rsquo;s strengths and their clients, and where they can bring the most value.&rdquo; Specialization can take different forms For some brokers, specialization means building deep expertise in a particular industry or segment and understanding the risks and client needs within it. For others, it&rsquo;s less about narrowing their book and more about how they deliver value through a more advisory-focused approach with clients. &ldquo;What&rsquo;s consistent is that intentionality matters,&rdquo; says Desbiens-Dubois. &ldquo;The brokers who stand out are the ones who are clear about where they can consistently deliver meaningful value to clients.&rdquo; From value to impact The survey findings also point to a shift in how brokers position themselves. As trusted advisors, brokers need to demonstrate that in a way clients can recognize. Specialization can help bridge that gap by making expertise more visible and easier to communicate. This is where the broker&rsquo;s role is evolving beyond placing the right coverage to helping clients make the right decisions in a more complex risk environment. &ldquo;Clients are dealing with more uncertainty than they were even a few years ago &mdash; whether that&rsquo;s technology, climate-related exposures, or evolving liability risks,&rdquo; Desbiens-Dubois says. &ldquo;As risks grow more complex, clients turn to brokers that can lead those conversations clearly and confidently.&rdquo; A role for insurer partners As brokers define where they focus, expectations of insurer partners are changing as well. Depth of expertise is becoming more relevant than breadth alone. Brokers are looking for partners that can support them in niche industries, provide insight into emerging risks, and help them deliver for clients in more complex situations. Sovereign&rsquo;s own approach reflects that. With more than 70 years in Canada, the carrier has long focused on building depth in select areas where it can bring the most value, rather than trying to cover every segment. &ldquo;At Sovereign, we believe depth of expertise is what creates real value for brokers and their clients,&rdquo; says Desbiens-Dubois. &ldquo;We focus on segments where we know we can make the most impact and partner with brokers that bring clear intent and focus to their own specialization.&rdquo; Clarity is a differentiator In a competitive market, how brokers choose to specialize will be a key part of how they define their value. That clarity of focus is becoming increasingly important at a time when nearly half of brokers say their value is still not well understood. Without it, differentiation becomes harder to sustain. &ldquo;You don&rsquo;t have to be everything to every client,&rdquo; says Desbiens-Dubois. &ldquo;You have to be exceptional where it matters to them most.&rdquo;

Brokers need to specialize. But where should they focus?

It&rsquo;s not just you: Employees everywhere are stressed out.&nbsp;
Nearly two-thirds (61%) of Canadian workers report showing up to work while mentally or physically unwell at least once a week, according to the Q1 2026 TELUS Mental Health Index.1 Gallup&rsquo;s State of the Global Workplace: 2026 Report reflects similar data, finding that 58% of Canadian employees experienced &ldquo; a lot of stress&rdquo; the previous day, compared to 40% of employees globally.2
While some level of work-related stress will always exist, too much of it can take a toll on your mental, physical and emotional health. The impact on mental health &ndash; a topic that&rsquo;s been in the spotlight lately &ndash; includes increased risk of anxiety, burnout, depression, and more.3 On the brighter side, many organizations have stepped up their efforts around employee mental health, and people are actively seeking supports like flexible work hours and a workplace culture that respects time.4
Certainly, support will differ from company to company, and often there&rsquo;s just no getting around being busy. But with a few simple daily habits and practices, you can take charge of your mental health and take some stress out of your workday.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
<h4>1. Use the delay delivery option for emails&nbsp;</h4>
If you&rsquo;re working outside the typical 9-to-5 or across time zones, consider using the &ldquo;delay delivery&rdquo; option on email. By scheduling your email to send the next working day, you can avoid interfering with your colleagues&rsquo; and clients&rsquo; off-the-clock time, and save them from the pressure of having to respond. Another tactic is to include a message in your signature along the lines of, &ldquo;My workday may look different than yours. Please don&rsquo;t feel obliged to respond outside your normal working hours.&rdquo;&nbsp; 
<h4>2. Craft clear and actionable email subject lines&nbsp;</h4>
Chances are you and your co-workers could spend an entire day responding to messages. There are many ways to tackle email overload: For example, some people have a mission to achieve &ldquo;zero inbox,&rdquo; while others set aside time blocks throughout the day to check messages.&nbsp;&nbsp; One tactic that can help you and your colleagues is to write clear and actionable subject lines on internal emails. Subject lines should communicate exactly what the email is about in six to 10 words, as well as the deadline, if there is one. This will allow the recipient to prioritize and label the email without opening it. For example, you can begin each subject line with &ldquo;INPUT,&rdquo; &ldquo;FYI,&rdquo; or &ldquo;UPDATE,&rdquo; followed by the key information.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
<h4>3. Implement and encourage focus time&nbsp;</h4>
Meetings and interruptions often prevent people from having adequate time to focus. When people assume their co-workers are always available for impromptu, non-urgent meetings and discussions, it can impact productivity and morale.&nbsp; Consider implementing a time-management technique called &ldquo;focus time&rdquo; (or &ldquo;focus hours&rdquo;), which means scheduling uninterrupted time to get your most important work done, and encourage your co-workers to do the same. Focus time has been found to increase productivity, improve decision-making, and boost creativity. Mark this time on your calendar, along with your standard work hours, and be mindful of your colleagues&rsquo; schedules when scheduling meetings. Outside of your team, check the time zone of the meeting participants to ensure you&rsquo;re not scheduling during their off-hours or breaks.5 
<h4>4. Try unconventional meeting styles</h4>
For most people, meetings are a source of workplace stress. In fact, in a recent U.S. survey by LiveCareer, 25% of respondents said in-person meetings are stressful, 31% said online meetings are stressful, and 28% said both are equally stressful. Only 16% said neither one is stressful. The findings point to several factors that cause stress and anxiety about meetings, including lack of preparation, fear of public speaking, and increased brain activity for prolonged periods.6 When you can, think outside the boardroom. Take advantage of meetings that are conversational, or require &ldquo;listening in&rdquo; by scheduling an outdoor or walking meeting. These meeting styles allow you to move, relax, and focus while still being productive. If the weather isn&rsquo;t cooperating, try an indoor caf&eacute; or &ldquo;coffee on the couch&rdquo; meeting at the office.&nbsp; 
<h4>5. Ask for &ndash; and offer &ndash; support&nbsp;</h4>
Prioritize transparent communication and open dialogue in the workplace. If you&rsquo;re struggling with something at work, requesting support can enable you and your teammates to share resources, work together, and offer encouragement through challenges. Although it&rsquo;s okay to ask for help, it&rsquo;s not easy for everyone. One thought leader suggests taking some time to think about what you&rsquo;re trying to achieve and then figuring out what resources you need. Completing these sentences will help:

</ul>
At the same time, if you notice a co-worker struggling, check in and offer support. Hopefully, others will follow your example and you can all work together to create a less stressful workplace.&nbsp;
